Abstract
Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus (DM) is a chronic disease with an increasing number of cases every year and requires long-term management, especially through proper dietary regulation. One of the important dietary guidelines for patients with type 2 DM is the 3J principle, which consists of proper meal timing, proper portion size, and proper food type. However, nutrition education at Purbaratu Community Health Center, Tasikmalaya City, is still delivered verbally and supported by limited educational media, causing patients’ understanding of healthy dietary patterns to remain suboptimal. Therefore, more attractive, easy-to-understand, and interactive educational media are needed. This study aimed to design a prototype of educational media in the form of an audio-visual digital illustrated storybook about dietary principles for patients with type 2 DM at Purbaratu Community Health Center, Tasikmalaya City. The study used the Research and Development (R&D) method with a 4D model covering the define, design, and development stages. The developed media was validated by material experts, language experts, and media experts, and then tested on a limited group of patients with type 2 DM. The validation results showed that the media was categorized as “Very Valid.” The average scores obtained were 95.33% from material experts, 96.66% from language experts, and 86.66% from media experts. This educational media used bright colors, animated illustrations, and simple language, making it more attractive and easier for respondents to understand. Overall, the audio-visual digital illustrated storybook was considered feasible to be used as an educational medium to help improve the knowledge and understanding of patients with type 2 DM regarding healthy dietary principles in daily life.
