Abstract

Chronic Kidney Failure (CKD) is a progressive and irreversible kidney dysfunction that causes a decrease in the kidney's ability to maintain fluid and electrolyte balance, and body metabolism. End-stage CKD patients generally require hemodialysis as a renal replacement therapy. Regulating sodium and potassium intake is an important aspect of nutritional therapy for hemodialysis patients because it plays a role in preventing complications such as hypertension, edema, fluid retention, hyperkalemia, and cardiovascular disorders. This study aims to determine the description of sodium and potassium intake in chronic kidney failure patients undergoing hemodialysis therapy at Jasa Kartini Hospital, Tasikmalaya City. This study used a descriptive design with an observational approach. The study sample consisted of 64 CKD patients undergoing hemodialysis and was selected using a purposive sampling technique. Data on respondent characteristics were obtained through direct interviews, while data on sodium and potassium intake were collected using a 2x24-hour food recall method and analyzed descriptively using a frequency distribution. The results showed that the majority of respondents were in the 45–65 years age group (55%), with a balanced gender proportion between men and women (50%). The average sodium intake of all respondents (100%) was classified as insufficient. Furthermore, the average potassium intake of most respondents was in the insufficient category (57 respondents (89%), good (5 respondents (8%), and excessive (2 respondents (3%). It was concluded that most chronic kidney disease (CKD) patients undergoing hemodialysis have sodium and potassium intakes that do not meet the recommended daily intake. Therefore, ongoing nutritional education and counseling are necessary to improve dietary compliance and prevent complications.
