Abstract
Background: Stroke is a major cause of disability, resulting in upper extremity weakness, which reduces the patient's functional ability. Rehabilitation efforts that can be implemented to increase muscle strength include a combination of mirror therapy and rubber ball gripping, which simultaneously stimulates the sensory and motor systems. Objective: To describe the application of a combination of mirror therapy and rubber ball gripping to increase upper extremity muscle strength in stroke patients in Melati Ward 2B, Dr. Soekardjo Regional General Hospital. Methods: This study used a case study method in two ischemic stroke patients experiencing upper extremity weakness. The intervention, a combination of mirror therapy and rubber ball gripping, was administered for 3 days of treatment, with a duration of 25 minutes per day. Muscle strength was measured using the Manual Muscle Test (MMT) and a handgrip dynamometer before and after the intervention. Results: The implementation results showed an increase in muscle strength in both patients. In the first patient, handgrip muscle strength increased from 3.6 kg to 5.2 kg, while in the second patient, it increased from 2.8 kg to 4.7 kg. The results of measurements using MMT also showed an improvement from scale 1 to scale 2 in both patients after three days of intervention. Conclusion: The combination of mirror therapy and rubber ball grasping improved upper extremity muscle strength in stroke patients. This intervention can be used as a simple, safe, and easy-toimplement rehabilitation therapy alternative to support motor function recovery in stroke patients.
