Abstract

Background: Invasive procedures such as intravenous injections in school-age children often cause pain. Pain that is not managed effectively can lead to physiological and psychological impacts, such as muscle tension and resistance to medical treatment. One non-pharmacological approach that has proven effective is storytelling distraction therapy using storybooks, which can divert children's attention from pain. Objective: This study aims to describe the implementation of storybook distraction therapy in reducing pain intensity in school-age children during invasive procedures at Arjawinangun Hospital. Methods: This study used a qualitative approach with a case study design. The subjects were two school-aged children who underwent invasive procedures over five days. Data were collected through interviews, pain assessment using the Wong-Baker FACES pain assessment scale, and documentation. Storybook distraction therapy was implemented for 5 minutes during the procedure. Results: Before the intervention, both subjects reported experiencing mild pain, rated 2 out of 10. After five days of intervention, both subjects consistently reported a pain rating of 0 (no pain). Conclusion: Storybook distraction therapy has proven effective as a nonpharmacological strategy for reducing pain intensity in school-aged children undergoing invasive procedures.
