Abstract
Background: Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD) is a growing global health problem. Nationally, the prevalence of COPD in Indonesia is estimated at 3.7%, while in West Java the prevalence rate reaches 4.0%. The primary clinical manifestation frequently reported by patients is shortness of breath, which leads to nursing issues related to ineffective breathing patterns. One non-pharmacological intervention to address this is the pursed-lip breathing exercise technique. Objective: To describe the implementation of the pursed-lip breathing exercise technique in improving ineffective breathing patterns in COPD patients in the Cut Nyak Dien Ward at Arjawinangun Regional General Hospital, Cirebon Regency. Methods: The study design utilized a descriptive case study involving two participants (Mr. T and Mrs. S) who met the inclusion criteria. The intervention was conducted over several days by training the patients to inhale through the nose and exhale through pursed lips. Data collection was performed through observation, interviews, and documentation. Results: After the regular implementation of the pursed lip breathing exercise, both patients showed significant improvement in their breathing patterns. This was marked by a decrease in respiratory rate (RR) approaching the normal range, reduced use of accessory breathing muscles, and patients feeling more relaxed while breathing. Conclusion: The pursed-lip breathing exercise intervention is effective in addressing ineffective breathing patterns in patients with COPD. This technique is recommended as a self-care procedure that can be routinely implemented in inpatient settings.
