Abstract

Background: Hospitalization may cause anxiety in preschool children due to unfamiliar environments, medical procedures, and temporary separation from familiar surroundings. Anxiety during hospitalization can lead to fear, restlessness, refusal of nursing procedures, and may interfere with the treatment process. One non-pharmacological intervention that can be used to reduce anxiety is busy book play therapy. Objective: To describe the implementation of busy book play therapy on anxiety scores among preschool children during hospitalization in Sa’id Bin Zaid Ward, Welas Asih Regional General Hospital, West Java Province. Method: This case study applied a nursing care approach to two preschool children experiencing anxiety during hospitalization. Anxiety levels were measured using the Preschool Anxiety Scale (PAS) before and after the implementation of busy book play therapy. The intervention was conducted for three consecutive days, with each session lasting approximately 15 minutes according to the child’s condition. Results: The results showed a decrease in anxiety scores in both subjects after the implementation of busy book play therapy. The anxiety score of An. A decreased from 53 to 34, while the anxiety score of An. M decreased from 63 to 36. In addition, both children demonstrated behavioral improvements, including reduced fear, restlessness, and refusal of nursing procedures, as well as improved interaction with nurses and the hospital environment. Conclusion: The implementation of busy book play therapy was effective in reducing anxiety scores among preschool children during hospitalization and can be used as a non-pharmacological nursing intervention to help children adapt to the hospital environment.
