Abstract

Background: Ineffective breastfeeding is a common problem in postpartum mothers due to suboptimal milk production and release. This condition can lead to inadequate nutritional needs for the baby and reduce the mother's confidence in breastfeeding. Oxytocin massage is a non-pharmacological intervention that can stimulate the release of the hormone oxytocin, thereby helping to increase the milk ejection reflex and facilitate lactation. Objective: This study aims to determine the effectiveness of oxytocin massage in increasing breast milk production in postpartum mothers with ineffective breastfeeding. Methods: This study used a case study method with a nursing care approach for two postpartum mothers in the Endang Geulis Room, Gunung Jati Regional Hospital, Cirebon City. The intervention, which involved oxytocin massage, was performed once daily for 10– 15 minutes for three consecutive days. Evaluation was conducted using an observation sheet for breast milk production indicators before and after the intervention. Results: Both patients experienced increased breast milk production after receiving oxytocin massage for three days. At the beginning of the assessment, Mrs. N received an observation score of 1 and Mrs. I received a score of 2. After the intervention, both patients achieved a final score of 9, categorizing breast milk supply as smooth. Differences in response were seen in the rate of increase in breast milk production indicators, with Mrs. I showing a faster increase than Mrs. N. This difference is thought to be influenced by physiological and psychological factors, breastfeeding frequency, the baby's sucking ability, and the hormonal response of each mother. Conclusion: Oxytocin massage effectively helps increase breast milk production and release in postpartum mothers with ineffective breastfeeding. This intervention provides a relaxing effect, enhances the milk ejection reflex, and supports successful breastfeeding throughout the postpartum period. Recommendation: Oxytocin massage can be used as a non-pharmacological nursing intervention in the management of postpartum mothers with suboptimal breast milk production in the first day after delivery.
