Abstract

Anemia during pregnancy can have adverse effects on the health of both the mother and the fetus. Iron supplement tablets are part of a Community-Based Health and Nutrition Program aimed at reducing the incidence of anemia in Indonesia. The perception of pregnant women in their third trimester with anemia can influence their adherence to taking iron tablets, where a positive perception will increase adherence, and vice versa. However, low adherence is often caused by side effects such as nausea, lack of knowledge, or not realizing the importance of iron tablets to prevent anemia and its adverse effects on both mother and fetus. This study aims to understand the perception of pregnant women in their third trimester regarding adherence to taking iron tablets in the Tawang Public Health Center area, Tasikmalaya City. This study used a qualitative approach by conducting in-depth interviews with pregnant women. The main informants in this study were 6 pregnant women, and the supporting informants were health volunteers, husbands, and parents at the Cipedes Community Health Center in Tasikmalaya City. The results of this study indicate that based on four themes of pregnant women's perceptions of iron tablets, pregnant women's knowledge about anemia and about iron tablets shows that those with a better understanding of anemia and the benefits of iron tablets exhibit a more positive attitude. Experiences of consumption, including side effects and forgetfulness, become obstacles to adherence, while positive experiences encourage women to take iron tablets more regularly. Family and healthcare support, including support from husbands, parents, community health workers, and midwives, has been proven to greatly help improve adherence. Attitudes and motivation, such as the desire to deliver normally, maintain fetal health, and fear of complications, serve as strong drivers for iron tablet consumption. These results suggest that some pregnant women are compliant in taking Fe tablets. It is recommended that the health center improve interventions in the policy of providing iron tablets so that compliance in taking iron tablets increases.
