Abstract

ABSTRACT Background: Mental retardation is a child who specifically has limited intellectual function. Specific limitations in the learning process can affect dental and oral hygiene. 22 people mentally retarded children in SDLB Negeri Cineam, Tasikmalaya Regency have OHI-S with moderate criteria. Objective: Determine the effect of using scheduled illustrated diary media brushing teeth (MEGI) on knowledge and oral hygiene in mentally retarded children Methods: Using a quasi-experimental research with a one group pre-post test design. The sampling technique used a purposive sample, obtained 33 samples of mentally retarded children, then performed an OHI-S examination and administered a knowledge questionnaire. Data analysis using Wilcoxon with SPSS application. Result: The results of statistical tests showed (p < 0.005) where there was a significant effect between counseling and knowledge and dental and oral hygiene of respondents. Conclusion: There is an influence of scheduled illustrated diary media brushing teeth on increasing knowledge and dental and oral hygiene in mentally retarded children.
