Abstract

The usage of herbs as medicine has become an alternative for society. Arabica coffee known contain various secondary metabolites such as polyphenols and flavonoids which have antibacterial activity. This study aims to determine the activity of brewed arabica coffee beans agains Escherichia coli bacteria that causes diarrhea. Brewed Arabica coffee bean was made in various concertations of 7,2%; 4,8%; and 2,4% and then tested for its antibacterial activity against Escherichia coli bacteria using the paper disc diffusion method. Chloramphenicol disc 30µg as positive control and aquadest as negative control. The results showed that brewed Arabica coffee beans could inhibit the growth of Escherichia coli bacteria. Brewed arabica coffee beans at concentration of 7,2% showed an inhibition zone with diameter of 5,3 mm. The efficiency of inhibition zone compared to the positive control is 24,02%.
