Abstract

Stroke is a functional disorder of the brain or nerve damage to the brain that occurs suddenly due to impaired blood flow in the brain so that it can cause death. One of the problems that is often found in stroke patients is the problem of paralysis. Paralysis is the loss of all or part of muscle function due to nerve damage to the brain. Paralysis can hit various kinds of nerves, one of which is the cranial nervus IX (glossopharyngeal), the function of the nerve is for the ability to swallow. Dysphagia is the difficulty of swallowing liquids or food caused by disruption of the swallowing process. Dysphagia is one of the risks of aspiration and nutritional deficiencies. There are several methods or ways to initially examine the patient's swallowing function in preventing aspiration risk, namely the Gugging Swallowing Screen (GUSS) method, which is a simple screening by providing a procedure for the process of swallowing food at a different consistency. GUSS is an assessment process that can identify dysphagia. GUSS makes a simple swallowing assessment and has been recommended in individuals with stroke with dysphagia in acute and long-term care (Regan, Donnellan, 2020). The type of research used is descriptive qualitative by assessing the picture of the swallowing ability of stroke patients. The subjects in this study were 2 stroke patients who were treated in the Melati Inpatient Room Unit 2B rsud dr. Soekardjo Tasikmalaya City. The results showed that of the two stroke patients had different swallowing images, the number obtained from the two stroke patients through the gugging swallowing screen (GUSS) assessment Mr.D got a score of 4 from the indirect swallowing test and a score of 0 from the direct swallowing test with the final number of 4 interpreted the category of severe dysphagia with a high risk of aspiration, Whereas Mr.S scored 5 from the indirect swallowing test and a score of 15 from the direct swallowing test with a final number of 20 interpreted the category of no dysphagia with minimal aspiration risk.
