Abstract

Citronella (Cymbopogon winterianus) is a plant that is useful as an antibacterial agent. Citronella essential oil (Cymbopogon winterianus) is known to have the main content of citronellal, citronellol, geraniol, and citral. These ingredients can kill Escherichia coli and Staphylococcus aureus bacteria. So fragrant citronella can be used as an active ingredient in hand sanitizers. This research is a laboratory experimental study, namely by formulating and evaluating hand sanitizer spray gel preparations of citronella essential oil with variations in carbopol 940 concentrations of 0.2% and 0.3% and variations in concentrations of propylene glycol 10% and 15%. Evaluations carried out included organoleptic, homogeneity, pH, viscosity, spraying patterns and stickiness. Data analysis was carried out using descriptive statistics and the results were displayed in tabular form. Hand sanitizer spray gel citronella essential oil is made by varying the concentrations of two gelling agents and humectants. The results of the study concluded that the gel preparations met the requirements for organoleptic, homogeneity, pH, viscosity, and adhesion, but formulas 2 and 4 did not meet the requirements for spraying patterns and spreadability because the preparations clumped when sprayed from the spray applicator. Based on the data obtained, variations in humectant concentrations did not affect the physical properties of the preparations.
