Abstract

Jumlah Kata: ± 250 kata Background: Dysmenorrhea is a common menstrual disorder among adolescent girls that may interfere with daily activities and academic performance. Calcium is believed to contribute to uterine muscle contraction and relaxation; therefore, adequate calcium intake may help reduce the severity of menstrual pain. A preliminary study at SMAN 1 Kaliwedi found that most female students experienced dysmenorrhea and had calcium intake below the recommended daily allowance. Methods: This study aimed to determine the relationship between calcium intake and the severity of dysmenorrhea among adolescent girls at SMAN 1 Kaliwedi, Cirebon Regency, in 2026. A quantitative analytic observational study with a cross-sectional design was conducted using a total sampling technique. Of the study population, 163 female students met the inclusion and exclusion criteria and participated as respondents. Calcium intake was assessed using the Semi-Quantitative Food Frequency Questionnaire (SQ-FFQ), while dysmenorrhea severity was measured using the Numeric Rating Scale (NRS). Data were analyzed using univariate and bivariate analyses with the Chi-Square test at a 95% confidence level (α = 0.05). Results: Most respondents had inadequate calcium intake (89.6%), whereas 10.4% had adequate intake. Moderate dysmenorrhea was the most common category (39.9%), followed by severe (33.7%) and mild (26.4%). The Chi-Square test showed a statistically significant relationship between calcium intake and dysmenorrhea severity (p = 0.000; p < 0.05). Conclusion: Calcium intake was significantly associated with the severity of dysmenorrhea among adolescent girls. Increasing the consumption of calcium-rich foods is recommended as a nutritional strategy to help reduce the severity of dysmenorrhea and improve adolescents' daily activities and quality of life. Keywords: calcium intake, dysmenorrhea severity, adolescent girls. Word Count: ± 250 words
