Abstract
ABSTRACT Background: Invasive herniorrhaphy surgery causes tissue trauma that directly triggers acute postoperative pain. High pain intensity can trigger a neuroendocrine response that hinders early patient mobilization, thus requiring nonpharmacological interventions such as Benson relaxation therapy to optimally control pain. Objective: Describe the application and analyze the effectiveness of Benson relaxation therapy in reducing acute pain scores in patients following herniorrhaphy. Methods: This study employed a descriptive qualitative design using a case study approach. The study subjects consisted of two patients post-herniorrhaphy surgery in the Imam Bonjol Ward of Arjawinangun Regional General Hospital, Cirebon Regency. The Benson relaxation therapy intervention, combined with the recitation of Islamic prayers, was administered over 5 days of hospitalization, with each session lasting 10–15 minutes. Pain intensity was measured using the Numerical Rating Scale (NRS). Results: Final evaluation results showed a significant and progressive downward trend in pain scores for both subjects. Patient one pain intensity decreased by 6 points, from an initial score of 8 (severe pain) to a final score of 2 (mild pain). Patient two also showed a significant decrease of 5 points, from an initial score of 7 (severe pain) to a final score of 2 (mild pain). Conclusion: The application of Benson relaxation therapy proved to be effective, safe, and easy to implement as a non-pharmacological adjunctive therapy to reduce the intensity of acute pain in patients following herniorrhaphy.
