Abstract
Background: Hypertension is a noncommunicable disease that remains a major health issue among the elderly and can lead to various complications if not properly managed. Ergonomic exercise is a form of light physical activity that combines body movements and breathing techniques to promote relaxation and improve blood circulation. Objective: To describe the condition of two elderly individuals with hypertension before ergonomic exercise, the implementation of ergonomic exercise, to identify responses after ergonomic exercise, and to analyze the differences in responses between the two elderly individuals with hypertension after ergonomic exercise. Method: A qualitative study using a case study approach involving two elderly women with hypertension who met the inclusion criteria, such as having stage 1 or 2 hypertension, being willing to participate, and being cooperative—specifically Mrs. N and Mrs. S. The intervention was conducted over five consecutive days, with each session lasting 20 minutes. Results: Both clients experienced a decrease in blood pressure; Mrs. N’s dropped from 170/90 mmHg to 140/70 mmHg, and Mrs. S’s from 150/90 mmHg to 128/70 mmHg, and they reported feeling relaxed. Conclusion: Both clients are elderly individuals with hypertension who regularly monitor their blood pressure and take 10 mg of Amlodipine once daily. The intervention was conducted for 20 minutes; following the intervention, positive responses were observed in the form of reduced blood pressure and a sense of physical relaxation. There was a difference in response between the two clients, influenced by their daily physical activity, the accuracy of their movements, and their initial blood pressure levels. Ergonomic exercise can be used as a non pharmacological therapy to help control blood pressure in elderly individuals with hypertension. Recommendation: Older adults can perform ergonomic exercises as a proper and regular non pharmacological adjunct therapy for 20 minutes to help maintain blood pressure stability.
