Abstract
Factors Associated with the Success of Early Initiation of Breastfeeding at Dadi Keluarga Hospital, Ciamis Regency, 2025 Irmayanti Poltekkes Kemenkes Tasikmalaya Program Studi Sarjana Terapan Kebidanan Email: r.irmayanti.amd@gmail.com ABSTRACT Introduction:Early Initiation of Breastfeeding (EIBF) is a critical intervention that contributes to newborn survival and supports the success of exclusive breastfeeding. Despite national guidelines promoting EIBF, its implementation remains suboptimal in several health facilities, including Dadi Keluarga Hospital. Various determinants such as maternal knowledge, maternal attitudes, health worker support, and type of delivery are believed to influence its success. Methods: This study employed a cross-sectional design involving 56 postpartum mothers selected through purposive sampling. Data were collected using structured questionnaires and observation sheets. Univariate analysis was performed to describe frequency distributions, while bivariate analysis using the Chi-Square test examined the association between independent variables and EIBF success. Results: Only 5.4% of respondents successfully practiced EIBF, while 94.6% did not. Most mothers demonstrated adequate to good knowledge, although many held negative attitudes and reported insufficient support from health workers. Bivariate analysis showed significant associations between maternal knowledge, maternal attitudes, health worker support, type of delivery, and the success of EIBF (p < 0.05). Analysis & Discussion: The findings indicate that EIBF success relies not only on maternal factors but also on the capacity of the health care system to provide consistent support. Good knowledge alone does not guarantee successful EIBF unless accompanied by positive attitudes and strong professional support. Normal vaginal delivery also showed a higher likelihood of enabling timely initiation of breastfeeding. Recommendations: Strengthening antenatal education, enhancing the competence of health workers regarding EIBF procedures, and reinforcing Baby Friendly Hospital Initiative (BFHI) standards are essential to optimize EIBF implementation in hospital settings. Keywords: Early Initiation of Breastfeeding, maternal knowledge, maternal attitude, health worker support, type of delivery.
