Abstract
Emesis gravidarum is a common condition experienced by first-trimester pregnant women and may interfere with daily activities, nutritional intake, and overall quality of life. Non-pharmacological approaches such as ginger and peppermint are widely used due to their natural antiemetic effects, yet scientific evidence directly comparing the effectiveness of ginger lozenges and peppermint lozenges remains limited. This study aimed to compare the effectiveness of both types of lozenges in reducing emesis gravidarum among first-trimester pregnant women at Sukamulya Public Health Center in 2025. This research used a quasi-experimental design with a two-group pretest–posttest approach, involving 46 respondents divided equally into the ginger lozenge group and the peppermint lozenge group. The severity of nausea and vomiting was measured using the PUQE (Pregnancy-Unique Quantification of Emesis and Nausea) score before and after the intervention. Data were analyzed using the paired t-test and independent t-test with a significance level of α = 0.05. The results showed that the ginger lozenge group experienced a reduction in PUQE scores from 8.04 to 5.39 (p = 0.000), while the peppermint lozenge group decreased from 8.17 to 6.39 (p = 0.000). The independent t-test indicated a significant difference between groups (p = 0.035), demonstrating that ginger lozenges were more effective in reducing emesis gravidarum. In conclusion, both ginger and peppermint lozenges effectively reduce nausea and vomiting, but ginger lozenges provide greater improvement and may be recommended as a safe non-pharmacological option for first-trimester pregnant women.
