Abstract

Elementary school-aged children are those between the ages of 6 and 12 who are enrolled in primary education. Nutritional status and health in this age group are crucial to support physical growth, cognitive development, and learning capacity in school. One of the factors influencing nutritional status is breakfast. Breakfast is estimated to contribute around 25% to the occurrence of nutritional problems. This study aims to describe the breakfast habits and nutritional status of elementary school students at SD Negeri 2 Siluman. This research employed a descriptive design. The population consisted of third-grade students at SDN 2 Siluman, with a total sample of 44 students selected using a Proportional Random Sampling technique based on Purposive Sampling criteria. Data collection was conducted through direct interviews with respondents regarding their breakfast habits, using a morning breakfast frequency form and SQ-FFQ. In addition, anthropometric measurements were taken directly using a microtoise and a digital scale to assess the respondents' nutritional status. The results showed that most respondents had breakfast habits categorized as occasional (41%). In terms of energy intake, 68% were in the adequate category, and the majority of respondents (73%) had a normal nutritional status. Therefore, the study concludes that irregular breakfast habits, suboptimal energy intake, and poor dietary patterns may influence nutritional status, although most respondents were still classified as having good nutritional status. Based on the research findings, it is recommended that schools enhance education on the importance of breakfast by conducting counseling sessions or collaborating with health professionals. This initiative aims to encourage students and parents to adopt regular and balanced breakfast habits. Implementing such educational strategies has been shown to positively influence students' attitudes, self-efficacy, and motivation regarding breakfast consumption, leading to improved dietary behaviors and nutrient intake.
