Abstract

ELFA FAUZIAH. Description of the Ability to Read Nutritional Value Information Labels, Consumption of Packaged Sweet Drinks and Nutritional Status of Tasikmalaya Polytechnic Students. Under supervision of DINA SETIAWATI Based on the Indonesian Health Survey (SKI), consumption of sweet drinks more than once a day in the adult age group is classified as high with a prevalence of 44.3%. The sugar content in packaged sweet drinks often exceeds daily recommendations, thus risking increased health problems and nutritional status, one of which is obesity. One strategy to control sugar consumption is through the ability and habit of reading nutritional information labels. According to a survey by the National Consumer Protection Agency (BPKN) in 2013, it was stated that the low public awareness to pay attention to the eligibility label on food was only 7.9%. The purpose of this study was to determine the description of the ability to read nutritional information labels, consumption of packaged sweet drinks and nutritional status of Poltekkes Tasikmalaya students. This type of research was descriptive research. The population of this study, namely all Poltekkes Tasikmalaya students in the Cilolohan area as many as 2,123 people. Determination of the research sample was carried out using the Accidental Sampling method. The sample of this study was 95 people. Data collection was carried out by interviewing using a questionnaire on the ability to read nutritional information labels and SQ-FFQ, measuring height and weight. Data analysis using univariate analysis. The results of the study showed that there were 64% of good nutritional information label reading abilities, and 36% in the poor category. Consumption of packaged sweet drinks in the low category was 67% and high 33%. Nutritional status based on BMI/U which had normal nutritional status was 64%, very thin 2%, thin 8%, fat 12%, and obesity 14%. Respondents are advised to be more active in enhancing their reading and understanding skills of the nutritional value labels on food and beverage products, especially packaged sweet drinks, in order to control daily sugar intake to prevent health problems and also maintain nutritional status.
