MINISTRY OF HEALTH OF THE REPUBLIC OF INDONESIA DIPLOMA III NURSING STUDY PROGRAM CIREBON POLYTECHNIC OF HEALTH TASIKMALAYA Scientific Paper, May 29, 2025 DESCRIPTION OF THE IMPLEMENTATION OF BENSON RELAXATION THERAPY IN ELDERLY PATIENTS MRS. E AND MRS. N IN THE CIPERNA PUBLIC HEALTH CENTER, CIREBON REGENCY Ayunda Nazwa Raihanah¹, Ati Siti Rochayati², Omay Rohmana³ ABSTRACT Hypertension is one of the most common non-communicable diseases among the elderly and is a major risk factor for serious complications such as stroke and heart disease. The management of hypertension involves not only pharmacological therapy but also non-pharmacological approaches such as relaxation techniques. Benson relaxation therapy is one such effective method that utilizes breathing techniques and repetition of calming phrases to activate the parasympathetic nervous system. This scientific paper aims to implement Benson relaxation therapy on two elderly patients (Mrs. E and Mrs. N) with hypertension in the working area of Ciperna Public Health Center, Cirebon Regency. The method used is a qualitative approach with a case study design. Data were collected through interviews, observations, physical examinations, and document studies, and analyzed descriptively. The results of the implementation showed that the application of Benson relaxation therapy for five consecutive days led to a significant reduction in blood pressure in both patients. Mrs. E experienced a decrease from 170/90 mmHg to 145/80 mmHg, while Mrs. N’s blood pressure decreased from 160/90 mmHg to 136/80 mmHg. In addition, subjective complaints such as headaches and anxiety were also reduced. This study concludes that Benson relaxation therapy is effective in reducing blood pressure in elderly patients with hypertension and can be a safe and practical non-pharmacological nursing intervention. It is recommended that this therapy be applied consistently, supported by adherence to medication and a healthy lifestyle.
