Abstract
Background: Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD) is a chronic lung disorder characterized by narrowing of the airways and accumulation of secretions, causing impaired ventilation. One of the non-pharmacological efforts to overcome this problem is with the Active Cycle of Breathing Technique (ACBT) and effective coughing techniques, which aim to help clear the airways and improve gas exchange. Objective: To determine the description of the application of Active Cycle Of Breathing Technique (ACBT) and Effective Coughing in Patients with Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD). Method: Case study with a nursing care approach including assessment, diagnosis, planning, implementation, and evaluation. Conducted on 2 patients with Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD) for 3 days with ineffective airway clearance problems. Results: After the intervention, both patients showed improvements in respiratory rate, increased oxygen saturation, and changes in breath sounds from rhonchi to vesicular. The first patient experienced a decrease in respiratory rate of 4x/minute and an increase in oxygen saturation of 6%, while the second patient experienced a decrease in respiratory rate of 5x/minute and an increase in oxygen saturation of 7%. Conclusion: The application of ACBT and effective coughing has been proven effective in helping to overcome ineffective airway clearance in COPD patients. Suggestion: ACBT and effective coughing techniques can be applied as non-pharmacological interventions to deal with problems in COPD patients, and consider individual patient factors and environmental conditions during therapy.
