Abstract

ABSTRACT Insulin leaves (Tithonia diversifolia) contain flavonoids, cyclitol carboxylic acid, anolide glucosides, and alkaloids. This plant is empirically used as traditional medicine by boiling. Infusion and decoction are methods of extracting extracts which are similar to boiling. The purpose of this study was to determine the total flavonoid content of insulin leaf extract using the infusion and decoctation methods and the effect of time of extraction. Phytochemical screening was carried out to determine the bioactive compounds contained in insulin leaves, especially flavonoids. Measurement of total flavonoid levels using the AlCl3 method and absorption using UV-Vis spectrophotometry from insulin infusion and leaf decoction extracts. The total flavonoid content with a wavelength of 426 nm insulin leaf extract using the infusion method was 156.3089 mgEQ/g extract and the total flavonoid content of insulin leaf extract using the dekokta method was 136.4552 mgEQ/g extract. This shows the effect of extraction time, namely the longer the extraction time, the lower the total flavonoid content. Keywords: insulin leaves, total flavonoids, UV-Vis spectrophotometry
