Abstract
The lips have a very thin skin layer and a lower melanin content compared to other parts of the skin, resulting in less natural protection and making them more susceptible to dryness and cracking. Lip balm is needed to maintain lip moisture; however, many products still contain synthetic chemicals that may cause adverse effects when used over a long period. Therefore, natural ingredients such as Virgin Coconut Oil (VCO) have potential as emollients due to their medium-chain fatty acid content, while Illipe Butter (tengkawang fat) belongs to the Cocoa Butter Substitutes (CBS) group. This study aimed to formulate a lip balm preparation using VCO and Illipe Butter and to evaluate its physical characteristics in order to determine the most suitable formulation. The study employed a laboratory experimental approach using three concentrations of Virgin Coconut Oil (VCO): 10% (F1), 15% (F2), and 20% (F3), while tengkawang fat was used as a fixed lipid base. The physical quality evaluation included organoleptic, homogeneity, pH, spreadability, and adhesiveness tests. In addition, the safety and effectiveness of the lip balm formulations were assessed through skin irritation and moisturizing tests. Data were analyzed descriptively and presented qualitatively in tabular form by comparing the results among the different concentrations of Virgin Coconut Oil. The results showed that all formulations exhibited a semi-solid consistency, yellowish color, characteristic aroma of tengkawang fat, and homogeneous appearance. The pH values ranged from 5.16 to 5.53, meeting the acceptable pH requirements for cosmetic preparations. The spreadability values ranged from 4.43 to 5.00 cm, indicating compliance with the required quality standards. The adhesiveness values ranged from 4.25 to 6.11 seconds, exceeding the minimum acceptable standard of 4 seconds. The irritation test revealed mild to moderate erythema without edema. The moisturizing test demonstrated an increase in skin hydration for all formulations, with the highest improvement observed in F3 (20%) at 14.1%. Based on these findings, Virgin Coconut Oil formulated with tengkawang fat as the lipid base shows potential for use in lip balm formulations with satisfactory physical quality. However, further formulation optimization is required to minimize the observed irritation effects.
